Commenced move.

Zulu, you know Hotel India is where Charlie had a Kilo of crabs?

tumbling.

Note to Massive, one last bit of my mind…

If you find a wallet on the ground and you picked it up and peeked in it to see who’s the owner,  but you got more private information out of it than needed, is it morally right to intrude further even if the information can be used to prosecute the wallet’s owner?

How bout if it was a chat window? It’s undeniably irresistable to dig into private conversations…

Of course, the intrudee will pay for whatever he has done since his privacy has been compromised..

but at the end of the day,  will you still respect the intruder?

When the Cold Wind Blows: Another mishap

Every Ramadan, there is sure to be a front page article about young Malay NSFs who pass away in motorcycle accidents. This Ramadan I wasn’t spared, as I read how another son of Singapore lost his life, the details of the set of “baju kurung” to be worn on Hari Raya that was bought by his mom.

Of course, what followed was my mom’s stern stare that suggested that hell would rain on me if I ever dare to chase my dream of riding a Vespa scooter.

Not to mention a lecture by dear dad about how he’d prefer me to die. Clue: as God’s humble and pious servant.

If I were to die in the next few months, I hope to die in the deserts of America whilst on my overseas Ex. as a humble Battery Quatermaster Sergeant and fly home on a Charlie 130 in a wooden casket with the Singapore flag and a Quran on top and be buried 6 feet deep in the very soil I was born.

On tombstone:
“He stood out amongst the rest not because of his strength, wealth nor knowledge. He just took up half the 6inch photograph!”

“Cynical to the death.”

“Do not come within 5m radius of this grave if you do not know the pledge or do not speak Singaporean.”

OK I’m being insensitive to the thought. I dread to die too, but hey, we all want to go off with a bang

Falstaff, a famous Shakespeare character, once set the value of honour to a dead soldier as nothing but a decoration that wouldn’t matter to the departed.

to me, honour is nothing

and everything.

I’ve been through at least 2 weeks of nauseating insights into my generation’s mindset by people with crebs on their chests. As if we Gen Ys need people to tell us about ourselves… or do we?

My name is Haziq.
I’m a Singaporean, and unlike many of them, I can sing the National Anthem and say the pledge without the help of an sms sent with good intentions and FYI I can say the pledge in Mandarin.. for those who can’t sing the anthem.. it’s not that you’re not patriotic.. you’re just not BOTHERED..

Whenever we’re asked: Do you believe in defending Singapore? We all say yes.

Whenever we’re asked: Are you wasting your time in NS? We all agree.

Like it or not, even the most ‘xiao on’ (zealous) soldier thinks that he is wasting his time and thinks there must be another way to defend this country – one that does not involve him running around in the humid jungle with his rifle (One NSF even suggested, though insensitively comical, to hire foreign workers to defend our land). We question the relevance of certain trainings and some even dare say we will never go to war, let alone survive one.

So what are we doing then?

No scholarship-hungry officer cadet nor committed regular can answer this question and calm the hearts of hundreds and thousands of men – because he is a soldier.

Gentlemen, we, the rest of us, from the ’storeman’ to the Company Quartermaster Sergeant, from the transport operator to the vehicle commander, the signaller, the medics, the riflemen, we are free men.

Free men who are not in this because we want to be soldiers.

Free men who are not in this because we want to fight.

Gentlemen, we are free men who book in every Sunday night (and for some lucky ones, every weekday morning), free men who surrender themselves to the inevitability of ’signing extra’, free men who commit to sign within an impossibly small box, free men who always agree, nod and exclaim ‘YES SIR’ because…

Free men have lives to live…

and for 2 years we ’suck thumb and die’ so that the remaining years of our lives, if ever a foreign dumb ass dares to create a filthy mess on our land, we force our pressurised thumbs far up his behind… because if not us, then who? If not now, then when? if not this, than what?

To all free men who are responsible for the efficiency of the army but are never and will never be appreciated for their contribution to the defence of our nation, keep sucking those thumbs!

Happy Birthday Singapore.
