Review: Where is the new sound
June 28, 2008, 4:03 pm

I refer to an article in weekend Today,  June 28-29, 2008 “Where is the new sound” by Ravi Veloo

I understand his sentiments towards today’s mainstream music.

“We don’t need a musicologist to tell us that we’re hearing the same type of songs on the radio from our childhood as if the whole world got sucked into an MP3 player and found not enough gigs for a new sound”

Sir, are we on the same Earth? You listen to the radio. What would you expect? And in Singapore too… Let me explain. The radio broadcast “radio-friendly” songs, stuff that the general public would most likely listen to and that would be the turning-50 Madonna. If you are looking for new sounds, a substantially controlled radio broadcaster afraid of loosing listeners is not a good choice. Why so? There are an evidently large number of new artistes not featured on local radio. My advice: Myspace. Seriously, radio??

Aye, but i agree, there has not been much change in music styles. But then again, try listening to the Klaxons, Low vs Diamonds or even emerging indie artists around the world (again, myspace and similar websites).

Then again, sooner or later, we’ll get bored.

My point actually is that music is like food, essential and must taste delicious. Awhile ago, we lived in the age of the traditional Laksa and Mee Pok (The Beatles, The Who, The Sex Pistols, sorry if I’m talking about rock bands, pls include artists of different genres in your visualisation and make sure period perfect). Then came McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut and Banquet (?) ([insert new artists here]). After awhile, we realised: Hey! I kinda missed the old stuff.. let’s try them again! Hence, we tend to recycle the music we listen to.

Sir, I understand your frustration but we have to allow things to come along naturally.. sooner or later, another Beatles will pop up which brings about my next point. Music not only has its influence but the pressure to produce something likable pressures music producers to hang on to a proven formula; a path that confirm die die will work. Hence, recycling!

“The thing about music – it’s only three minutes a song! So why can’t somebody some up with a new sound, not just 20-somethings imitating their grandmother’s music”

Sir, myspace myspace myspace. Type search: Indie [this is just a suggestion] . THERE ARE ALOT OF NEW SOUNDS OUT THERE.

Also, how can we define a new sound? and if there is, can we tolerate and appreciate it? You see, sir, we may be on the brink of what I would like to call I-Have-Seen-All-The-Colours-Of-The-Universe Phenomenon. We, I beleive could have possibly listened to all genres possibly ever to be heard by our human ears and be tolerated. Can you define a new colour? Even if we DID find a new sound, it would be interesting to see how people perceive it. Try and imagine a new colour, seriously, use mspaint, look at the choose-a-colour spectrometery-thingy and imagine a colour that would not appear on it excluding gold, silver, bronze and shiny stuff that doesnt appear on paint.. impossible ain’t it? Like the beautiful colours of the world aplenty, there comes a human limit. Likewise for music.

I do hope that we humans find that holy-grailish new sound you envisioned. And I would love to name the genre after you, the visionary who “can hit an impressive high note – a scream – when he hears Madonna on the radio”.

Radio? Seriously…

The blogger apologizes beforehand if the writer, Mr. Ravi Veloo was in any way hurt by the above post. He would be happy to recommend him some sounds to listen to while waiting for a new sound to emerge. He also appreciates that he is not the only person who can scream although he screams whenever the radio is turned ON..

Law/Verdict: Declaration of a State of E-lennon-cy

RootersAnfield, Singapore

The government of ZiqZaq has released an
official statement declaring a state of e-lennon-cy.
Local law and policymakers have long sought this
protection which encourages freedom of good speech.
The ZiqZaqian government has been criticised of
being unclear in its statements containing loopholes
of uncertainty allowing its citizens to interprete the
world-class policies it makes in hyperbolic means which
sparked many debates among grassroots leaders.
For almost the past 18 years of governance, ZiqZaq
has been a peaceful nation with a reputation for good
international diplomatic relationships. Recently however,
due to economic focus on education, ZiqZaq’s ruling party,
Hare Hare Krishna enforced laws and policies which benefited
many but due to its controversiality, HHK’s global mindset,
the majority Muslim country shocked its neighbours.
HHK firmly believes it has never done anything that may
have endangered its neighbouring political bodies and urges
them to remember the good track record it always has had.
HHK also emphasises that if faced with military threats, it will
stand by its democratic approach and would open doors to
discussion. However, it must first declare the State of
E-lennon-cy to show that it has always believed in good policies
that benefit the people and is not afraid of enforcing them.
ZiqZaq also faces contoversy in its region for being influenced
by Musixist values of Chill-munism.

Seriously, I wanna have more to do in school
so i can like, focus
and do stuff so I won’t brood
so I won’t like think about stuff
yeah.. like think..
and worry, and think and worry
yeah, so like just give me something to do
something to stare at, maybe..
then, like maybe, my mind won’t like do what it’s doing
_______________________________________________________________

And yeah, i’m sorry, aye? I take back my words about your dog being as cute
as a grunt and about me not wanting to melee it…

_______________________________________________________________

Maybe I should stop talking with puns, rhymes, analogies, metaphors, personifications cos I may mean something but someone else interpretes it differently and there’s only ONE person, (or maybe ONE and another half-person) who could ever understand and interprete me right.

But if I stopped and it doesn’t come back, I would lose me..

Decision: I never meant anything wrong in my words and the worst-intentioned speech I made was an apology. Henceforth, I hereby declare a State of Lennony which gives me the right to say nice things in the most un-obvious, vague-est, dubious way ever and people can feel whatever the hell they wan’t to feel cos after all, all words meant well and are brilliant, i daresay, works of literature.

*slaps face* what AM i saying!!! This is not the first time your poetry struck the wrong chord! There you go again, another one of those silly expressions cos you do not want an espirit de escaliers.. and there you go again.. now someone’s gonna read and ask what the hell is that

Verse: The Gentleman From Derbyshire
June 26, 2008, 10:43 am

There was a man from Derbyshire
He was by birth a scouser
Look at his pants there is no fire
Assumption: He is no liar

He was a feathered gentleman
Except in his looks
His words and manner
Is seriously by the book

Alas, the people of derbyshire
elegantly simple
Could not interpret his gentle manner
And popped him out like a pimple

Theatrical, they said, We cannot understand
Why he’s so nice to women
Ah, cos he’s an ugly man
They mistook his politeness as omen

The poor man from derbyshire
Wishes he couldst return to anfield
Where his kind and gentle manner
Won’t send people up the hills

He dearly misses all his friends
in derby where he was kicked out
To him friends are more than friends
and their absence, a heart ripped out

Scouser by blood
never a dud
Always loyal to his mates
Shall wait
silently in bed
Until derby opens back its gates

Prose: I hate the sun.
June 25, 2008, 3:14 pm

I hate the sun. The first time I saw it, it was bright and cheery and basked me with its light. The flourescents and incandescents did too but it was the nature of the sun that made me like it at first and for once i thought i could get a light source that was genuinely happy towards me. For awhile, me and the sun got along well; it said it’s name was solar but I could call it sun… It told me how I was different from other earth beings… how some earth beings try so hard to harness its power.. it found them desperate.. Then suddenly, within 8 hours, the sun stopped shining.. it avoided me.. I was in total darkness! The moon came and warned me about the sun but I wanted to find out for myself.. Yes, indeed, after this short experience, I realised the sun is evil.. trust me it is.. you try talking to the sun at 12 noon, once it gets tired, it will ignore you at around 8 and only come back 12 hours later sneering at you making sure it is in clear view but it doesnt want to listen or talk to you.. just sneering away… moon says it will come every time the sun isnt around so i wont be so hurt.. the flourescents and incandescents say even though I never really appreciate them , sometimes turning them on then off again, they will always be my light source when I turn them on.. but i cant forget the sun.. everyday i see it.. and i miss having fun with the sun.. but like moon says.. sun is not the only star, AND sun could give me skin cancer..

I hate the sun

But i will always remember it…

And as for the moon, thanks for listening

to the incandescents, although you are not as cheery, you are loyal light sources

to the flourescents, thanks for sticking with me..

I love them light sources, except the sun..
