Have you had diarrhea for days?
Until you bleed?
Imagine if you have to dig a hole everytime you need to go.
Imagine if your blood pressure drops to 43.
Imagine if you’re so tired, your heart rate jumps to 120 just climbing up stairs.
Right now, most of you wouldn’t even think of doing physical exercise.
Now imagine you have to lead your buddies in song for a 12 kilometer march, having all the above just days before, given IV drips the previous day and a medical excuse for physical activities – plus you did not do the mandatory pre-12km 8-click march for conditioning weeks before.
I was sure as hell I could do it. I couldn’t bear leaving my buddies behind. The fire in their eyes when I ran up and changed to full battle order and appealing to participate motivated me.
After Action Review
Cough Syrup and Paracetamol: Free
12 km with buddies: Priceless
GST: Fever, 38.3 degrees celsius. Heat Exhaustion. Dehydration.
Extra Charges: Diarrhea w/ blood
Let’s just say this is for all those times I was unfit for duties.
Semper Fidelis,
Berak Boy

Imagine having to prepare a mosquito net every night before you sleep. The net would finalize your routine; you have to readjust the net if you wanted to lock your cupboard if you forgot to. The green net, with holes large enough for mosquitoes to enter anyway, eliminates any convenience. It is a suffocating blanket which you have to refold neatly and hang above the bed every morning upon waking up.
Now imagine taking the risk of not putting it on one night knowing no one has been checking for the past 100 days and getting caught that very night with the repercussion being a day’s confinement in camp.
Yes, tonight, at 2300 I have to book in hours earlier, on Vesak Day, the day before Mothers’ Day because I did not put on my mosquito net on one fine night 4 weeks earlier.
To think I organized a fund raiser to supply mosquito nets to Dengue stricken areas of Africa. Imagine if the nets came with a tag that says: the donor of this net was caught for not putting it on before he slept and was not allowed home on a weekend on Mothers’ Day. SO PUT YOURS ON.
And for the record, I only had mosquito bites when I had the net on.

Its 1 year after the year Singapore dreamt to have reached the world cup. I think.
Its also the year following the year that I finally become a hippie again after brandishing a weapon and living in a hierarchy I would never dream of experiencing ever again…
It’ll also be the year I will be admitted, albeit a year or so later than my female peers, into a local university.
I’ll try to imagine what 2011 will be.
More environmental problems.
Maybe Bovine Flu, a cross of swine, human, bird and bovine flu viruses, it’ll never end.
Singapore might have a foreign to local talent ratio equivalent to the ratio of stars to crescent on its flag. Which reminds me: both Singapore and China have 5 stars on their flags! No wonder people used to think we’re part of the mainland. Not that the difference is any less prominent now.
Formula 1 will lose its popularity… replaced with a more gruesome version where drivers have to knock down bystanders.
Reanimation of the dead, not in order of preference: John Lennon, Einstein and Earth.

My 4 days worth of MC was worth it. I had fever and diarrhea, a farewell gift from the jungle, very much appreciated.
Fringe, it really stretches my perception of reality and what is ultimately science fiction, or rather, pseudoscience fiction.
I met my one month deadline.
How much research must be done?
